How to Build Resilience

Written by Riya Mital

Have you ever had a day where nothing seems to be going right? Your shoes are on backwards, your coffee spills on your clothes, and to top it all off, you’ve got a flat tire–and that’s on top of everything else going on in your life. Yep, we have all been there. But these tough days have always passed over and more importantly, they have built my resilience. But how do you take these bad days and turn them into determination and resilience?

Remember that bad days and bad times are temporary.

Bad days can be hard at the moment, but look back at all the bad times you have had before, and then look at the fact that you made it out! You will make it out again!  Sometimes, you have to grit your teeth and let those bad times pass until you can get to the good, but the good makes it all worth it. The bad times will only build resilience more.

List your blessings!

When things get hard it can be easy to forget what really matters to you. This also translates to forgetting what you are blessed to have in life. Try remembering the people you love most at this time in your life and what they mean to you. Even a quick phone call can make you feel so much better. Get into contact with them and surround yourself with positive energy again.

SELF CARE

Self care after a bad day is also something that can go a long way!

Take a longer shower, put on a face mask, read for even ten minutes  Anything that will relax you at the end of the day can be so valuable and helpful especially in tough times. It will also be helpful in refreshing your mind and body in order to build greater resilience to tackle tough problems.

Self care should not be regarded as weakness, but instead as strength and a way to create resilience.

Have an Anchor

An anchor is something that will reliably keep you stable and calm  For some, that can be people, for others it can be something as little as a trinket.

Anything that will calm you down in the moment is so crucial to help your bad days from getting worse. It also creates resilience through the reminder of the good instead of focusing on the bad.

For example, my necklace is something meaningful and personal to me, so even a reminder as small as that can greatly help. This can help you with your resilience as you have something to latch onto when yearning for a positive amidst all the negativity.

Bad days and bad periods of time are inevitable. However, you can always learn from them and become a stronger person. They may be tough at the moment, but there is always a silver lining. If you have trouble finding it, create it through your resilience!
